Refractories are made from natural and synthetic material or combination of compounds and mineral such as fireclay, bauxite, silliminite, kyanite, quartzite, chromite, magnesite, dolomite, zirc sand ,silicon carbide and others. Depending up the application, refractories must resist chemical attack; withstand molten metal and similar adverse condition. Since, the variety of performance characteristics and properties; different types of refractories and been developed for specific purposes.
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the largest steel maker of nation, is a major refractory user. Steel  production involves processing of materials at very high temperatures ,thus the nature, type and usage of refractories in SAIL has changed a lot in tune with the advance in metallurgy .NOW the practice is to go for operational friendly refractory practice is to for operational friendly refractory practice, which primarily implies use of better grade and quality of refractories .The availability, reliability and consistency in performance of refractories are very important for steel making.
